The Doors of San Miguel

I read somewhere that there are over 1,000 doors in San Miguel de Allende.  Many of the ones we saw were beautifully carved works of art.  The local woodcarvers are renowned for their skills.  Here are just a few examples:

Some of them had numbers written on them in chalk like this:

I never did find out what these markings meant.  It was probably something mundane like a gas reading but I like to imagine it was some sort of secret code, known only to a few.
